- The Bonneville Slide blocked the Columbia River near the site of present-day Cascade Locks, Oregon with a land bridge 200 feet (60 m) high. The river would eventually remove the blockage, but this event would become remembered in the local legends of the Native Americans as the Bridge of the Gods.
- The first English language newspaper was published.
- The Age of Enlightenment - The Western revolution in philosophy began, which would gave birth to Modern political thought and philosophy.
- The Industrial Revolution began, along with the Scientific Revolution.
- Antonio Stradivari's 'Golden Peroid' of violin making began.
