Chen-Yu (Phillip) Sheu is a professor with joint appointments in electrical engineering, computer science and biomedical engineering at the University of California, Irvine.[1] He has contributed to semantic computing, robotics computing, artificial intelligence, biomedical computing, and multimedia computing.

Sheu has published more than 100 papers[2] on object-relational data, their applications and knowledge engineering. He has also written papers in Computer Science, drug discovery, biomedical engineering, and machine learning.[3] Additionally, he published two books: Intelligent Robotic Planning Systems[4] and Software Engineering and Environment - An Object-Oriented Perspective;[5] and was co-editor of Semantic Computing (IEEE Press/Wiley).[6]

Education[edit]

Sheu, an American citizen originally from Taiwan has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University[7] and an M.S. in Computer from UC Berkeley. In 1986, he completed his doctoral thesis Logic-oriented Object Bases[8] under the guidance of C.V. Ramamoorthy.[9]

Career and contributions[edit]

Sheu's current research is about semantic computing.[10] Currently, he is a professor at the University of California, Irvine.[1]

He is known for starting the field of semantic computing; semantics addresses all the resources including data, documents, tools, devices, processes, and people. Moreover, the scope of Semantic Computing includes analytics, semantics description language and integration, interface, and its applications. The latest development of ChatGPT[11] demonstrates the importance of semantic computing.

Sheu is also recognized for his founding role in renowned conferences and initiatives. He founded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Technical Committee on Semantic Computing (TCSEM)[12] and the Institute for Semantic Computing Foundation.[13] He has the vision behind the IEEE International Conferences of Semantic Computing (ICSC)[14] and Transdisciplinary AI (TransAI).[15]

Sheu is the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Semantic Computing[16] (IJSC) and the Encyclopedia of Semantic Computing and Robotic Intelligence (ESCRI).[17] These platforms have contributed to disseminating knowledge and advancements in the respective fields. At Systems Control Technology Inc. (SCT),[18] he worked as a computer scientist, moreover, at Advanced Micro Devices Inc.[19] (AMD), he worked as a product planning engineer.

Awards[edit]

Sheu received an IEEE fellow award in 2003.[20] He is the inaugural educator-in-chief of the IEEE AI Academy [21] and also the part of IEEE conferences.[22]

Books[edit]

He has published books on the state of the technology and future of semantic computing:

  • Sheu, Phillip; Yu, Heather; Ramamoorthy, C. V.; Joshi, Arvind K.; Zadeh, Lotfi A. (2010-07-08). Semantic Computing. Wiley. ISBN 978-0-470-58821-5.

  • Sheu, Phillip C.-Y. (2012-12-06). Software Engineering and Environment: An Object-Oriented Perspective. Springer Science & Business Media. ISBN 978-1-4615-5907-8.

He is also a co-editor of Semantic Computing (IEEE Press/Wiley).[23]

Research and publications[edit]

Sheu has published more than a hundred research papers since 1986 [24] but his recent work in the field of semantic computing, bioinformatics, and health informatics is as follows:
