Dinesh Krishnan B is an Indian cinematographer, born in Chennai known for his works in Tamil cinema. His notable works are Soodhu Kavvum, Thegidi, Sethupathi, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, Dora, Kanaa, Thaana Serndha Kootam, Mookuthi Amman, Maara, and Nenjuku Needhi.

Education[edit]

Dinesh Krishnan completed a three-year Diploma in Film Technology in cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute. In the course of his studies, he received the Tamilnadu State Award for 'Best Cinematography' in the year 2010 for his short film 'Thira'. He also worked as a student photographer in the Vikatan publications.

Film career[edit]

Dinesh Krishnan began his film career in 2013 as a Director of photography after graduating from the MGR Film Institute, Chennai. He worked with the ace cinematographer R. Ratnavelu ISC, as an associate cinematographer in various films & TV commercials including Vaaranam Aayiram (2008), Endhiran (2010), 1: Nenokkadine (2014). [1]

In the year 2013, his first movie Soodhu Kavvum was released. The film received various awards and recognitions for its witty dark humor, music, and avant-garde visual treatment. The film notably became a definite guide for its succeeding films in the genre of crime comedy.[2]

He worked as a Director of photography for Thegidi (2014), Kappal (2014), and Valiyavan ( 2015). He worked in the movie X: Past is Present (2015) which was a collaborative feature film directed by a team of eleven filmmakers.

In the year 2016, the movie Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum (2016) was released. The movie was acclaimed for its beautiful blend of romance and comedy with breezy visuals. In the same year, the action thriller Sethupathi (2016) and Rekka (2016) with actor Vijay Sethupathi in the lead were released.

He worked in the movie Dora (2017), a supernatural thriller, with actor Nayanthara in the lead which was recognized for its skillful lighting. The movie Puriyatha Puthir (2017) was also released in the same year.

He is the DOP for the movie Kanaa (2018) [3], a sports drama film with a strong social content of gender inequality and regional prejudices that revolve around women's cricket. His movie Thaana Serndha Kootam (2018) is a remake of the 2013 Hindi film Special 26.

He worked in the movie Mookuthi Amman (2020), a fantasy comedy film that was released on Disney+ Hotstar. His movie Maara (2021), a romantic adventure film released through Amazon Prime Video was well-recognized for its artistic visual content. He worked as DOP for the movie Nenjuku Needhi (2022) in the genre of political thriller with Actor Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead.[4]

His Telugu movie MAD (2023), a comedy-drama is a blockbuster. He filmed the promotional song video 'Dosthi', for SS Rajamouli's RRR movie in 5 languages. He has also worked on individual music videos for Music Directors such as Anirudh Ravichandran and Ghibran for Sony Music, and Think Music.

He worked as Director of Photography in the Disney+ Hotstar web series Label (2023) which is appreciated for its intriguing visuals and filmmaking.
