Patrick Murtagh (born February 11, 2000) is an Australian professional American football tight end and former Australian rules football player for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). From Gold Coast, Australia, he joined the Jaguars through the International Player Pathway Program (IPPP) in 2024.

Early life[edit]

In high school, Murtagh was a national-level decathlete and was a Queensland state champion.[1] He was also awarded a place on Australia’s Commonwealth pathway, a program where the Australian government would subsidize his college tuition, before he instead decided to pursue a career in Australian rules football.[2][3]

Australian rules football career[edit]

Murtagh was drafted by the Gold Coast Suns as a Queensland Academy zone selection in the 2019 AFL Draft.[4] He joined the Suns academy following the draft.[4] Murtagh joined the Gold Coast Suns developmental team from 2020-2022.[5][6] He played in both the ruck and key forward positions.[7] He was delisted in September of 2022 without playing a single game.[8] In 2023, Murtagh joined the NFL International Player Pathway as a tight end.[9]

NFL career[edit]

On May 4, 2023, Murtagh was allocated to the Detroit Lions, but had to step down on May 22, 2023 due to a medical issue.[10][11]

Murtagh was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 15, 2024.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Murtagh is the son of Michael and Vala Murtagh.[12] His mother is from Papua New Guinea and his father is from Australia.[8]

Murtagh lost his father to cancer in 2021.[13]
