Summary

Description
English: Woodcut showing large group of armed men attacking a two-and-a-half story stone building (Alton Observer building). Weapons shown are rifles, pistols, sledge-hammers, and a pike. Most men are in group approaching building, but three men to the far left are firing from behind a low wall, three more are at the immediate left of the building, one is at the top of a ladder, supported by another man, and two men are attempting to break down the door of the building. Riot resulted in the death of Reverend Elijah Parish Lovejoy, abolitionist, newspaper editor, and Presbyterian minister. Missouri History Museum Photograph and Prints collections.
