Summary

Description

Fifteen of these Class 527s were built between 1878 and 1879. These locomotives were built in order that the GER would be better able to compete for the lucrative London coal traffic, by hauling loads of 400 tons net with one engine - some 700 tons gross - which was an exceptionally high payload for the period.

They were the first 2-6-0 locomotives to run in Britain. The first engine No. 527 was named Mogul, and this became the generic name for locomotives of this wheel arrangement.

This photo was taken from an old original photo we came across while helping to clear the house of a deceased friend. I have uploaded it to Flickr in the hope that it might be interesting to steam enthusiasts.
