Summary

Description

Russula claroflava Grove. ss. Melz, & Zv., J. Schff.

Image location: Fraser Experimental Forest, Grand Co., Colorado, USA

I believe these(or ones very similar) were identified as Russula declorans at the 50th NAMA Foray. The problem I have is that the cap color is very yellow and seems to lack the orangy tints for this species. Also the spore print is very ocher and almost bright orange in thick mass. Most references note a pale yellow or pale ocher in one case. All the other yellow capped Russulas that i could find also seem to have lighter colored spores. The spore size does seem to fir in on the lower end of the range for this species. I got an average of ~ 9.2 X 7.4 microns. I didn’t really look for the flesh turning gray feature.

Recognized by sight: bright yellow cap, spore deposit ochre (darker than decolorans)

Based on microscopic features: spores with spiny warts, 8-9,5 × 6,5-7,5 microns, warts 0,5-1 micron
