Hydnum ferruginescens Swenie & Matheny

Image location: Shope Creek, North Carolina, USA

Habitat: mixed woods with some White Pine and occasional Eastern Hemlock. Caps:44-60 mm diameter, dry, broadly convex to flat, sometimes umbilicate, smooth Teeth: whitish, to 5 mm, basically adnate Stipe: 40-45 mm long and 10-16 mm thick, tapering either way, often eccentric, with some abortive apical teeth Flesh, brittle, whitish, brittle, staining orange-brown Odor and taste: vaguely pleasant and fruity Spores: whitish

Based on microscopic features: spores 5.9-7 × 5.7-6.8 um, subglobose, hyaline, maybe slightly rough
