Description
English: A supermarine Spitfire fighter, in U.S. Army Air Force markings, which made a forced landing on the beach at Paesternum, South of Salerno, in Sept. 1943. Note USS LST-359 in background. Supermarine Spitfire JK707 Mk VcT. Assigned to the 307th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Groip, 15th Air Force USAAF. Flown by Major Virgil C Fields, shot down on 9-9-43 by the gunfire from a German Dornier 217; crash landed on beach off Salerno 9-9-43
