The magazine was started October 1960 by Wayne Green and his wife Virginia. They were divorced in 1965 but Virginia returned to the magazine as Business Manage in December 1974. In this issue's editorial, Wayne describes the founding of BYTE magazine.

This 9.25 by 6.25 inch magazine has 192 pages. The magazine went to the larger 8.25 by 10.75 inch size in January 1976.
