English: Satire; a group of women declaring their support for the boycott of tea, plate V from a series satirizing events leading up to the Declaration of Independence by the American colonies.


A woman on the left with her back to the viewer signs a paper labelled 'We the Ladys of Edmonton do hereby solemnly Engage not to Conform to that Pernicious Custom of Drinking Tea, or that we the aforesaid Ladys will not promote ye wear of Manufacture from England untill such time that all Acts which tend to Enslave this our Native Country shall be Repeated'; another sitting opposite is distracted by a soldier who leans in to embrace her as she signs; other women drink punch while a black woman holds a tray; others on the left empty tea caddies; a pissing dog licks an infant playing on the floor. 25 March 1775

Though no impresions from the series were in the BM collection when George was writing, she describes them from reproductions in R.T. Halsey's 'Boston Port Bill', pp. 277-317; she attributes it tentatively to Dawe.
