While Jolson was known and now is infamous for his blackface performances, he was also somewhat racially progressive for his time. He often fought for the inclusion of black performers in Hollywood and vaudeville. While this black actor was uncredited and only played a minor role, the fact that he was included at all, with speaking lines no less, would have been considered controversial at the time.
