Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating an early body of work in Ann Agee's career that began in the early 1990s after two fellowships at industrial plumbing fixture manufacturers: her large-scale ceramic installations of functional, ornate bathrooms and detailed ceramic-tile murals, which brought Agee her first major attention. The bathrooms were lavishly ornamented and fully functional; their hand-made porcelain fixtures and back-wall mosaic tiles featured detailed patterns, diagrams and images delicately rendered in the blue-and-white style of Delftware of water-related bodily, municipal and industrial images. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this major early developmental phase and highly distinctive body of work in her career, which attracted early attention, inclusion in major exhibitions, national reviews, and museum acquisitions. Agee's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in detail in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.
