Throughout the plains and level forests of the tropical and southern latitudesof North America, the Indian wears little or no clothing, during a large part of theyear. But it is different on the eminences elevated thousands of feet above thesea; and also very different as the observer extends his views over the temperatezone. Nudity, where it is asserted of tribes within the present area of the United States,as is done by De Bry, of the Virginia Indians, implied generally uncovered limbsand body. But it permitted the azian or loin-cloth, a necklace of shells, claws, orwampum; feathers on the head, and armlets, as well as ear and nose jewels. ThePowhatanese woman had, if nothing else, a short fringed kirtle of buck-skin; thebust was nude, but this was doubtless only the summer costume. But even in summer, the northern Indians were less scantily clothed. The skinsof beasts were adapted to every purpose of garment, and the severity of winter waswar
