Portrait of S F Cody shortly taken shortly after winning his first Michelin Trophy.

The Michelin Trophy was an annual competition sponsored by Monsieur Michelin. The trophy shown with Cody, was for the longest flight in a closed circuit in the year 1910 by a British subject in an all British plane. Cody won this on the 31st December, beating his two rivals T.O.M. Sopwith and Alec Ogilvie with a flight of 185 miles 787 yards. Cody went on to win three more Michelin trophies in 1911 and 1912.

This photograph was scanned and released by the Imperial War Museum on the IWM Non Commercial Licence. The work was created by a member of the Royal Engineers before the First World War. In the UK, photographs taken in military service, or works of art created as part of military service, became controlled under the Crown Copyright provisions and so faithful reproductions may be reused under that licence, which is considered expired after 50 years.
