Summary

Description

Walls and gates of Avignon in the 13th and 14th centuries

Notes

  • Mainly based on Hayez (1978) p. 194
  • It is not known whether all the 13th century walls were double. There may have been a single wall between Briançon and Ayguière, and between Infirmières and Aurose.(Rolland 1989, p.186)
  • There is no evidence that four of the 13th century gates were actually double: Pertuis, Saint-Agricol, Évêque and Aurose.(Rolland 1989, p.178)
  • Position of the 13th century walls in the northwest part of the town is not known.(Rolland 1989, p. 186) In part of this area the map follows Fig 44 in Carru 1999 p. 116.
  • Five of the 14th century gates disappeared when the walls were remodelled in 1481-1487. These were: Prècheurs/Dominicains, Périers, Salins, Palefrenerie and tour Violete.(Girard, 1958 pp. 342-343) The position of some of these five gates is uncertain especially between Aurose and St Lazare.(Clap and Huet 2005, p. 22 Fn 51)
  • Tour Violete has not been included here. It was somewhere between St-Lazare and Salin.
  • Ayguière was also spelled Eyguière, Ayguière etc.(Clap and Huet 2005, p. 21 Fn 45)
  • French authors use "Portail" for the 13th century gates and "Porte" for the modern gates but the sources differ on the use of "Portail" for the 14th century gates that were removed in the 15th century.
