Summary

Description
English: Australian War Memorial Summary: Kuching, Sarawak. c.1945-09-12. The most remarkable story of the Kuching Prisoner of War (POW) compound was that of Warrant Officer I. L. Beckett [sic] of Enfield, London, England, who constructed a wireless set from pieces of wire, a mess tin, a damper off a Norton bike for dial, and generator made of scrap. This wireless operated for practically the whole of their internment period and as a morale booster saved many lives. Fellow prisoners subscribed over 1000 pounds for him as a token of appreciation. He intends to use the money to set up a wireless business in London."
