Description
English: Central portion of the river front of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre, originally constructed around 1600 to 1610; detail from a photograph by Édouard Baldus taken c. 1857, before the demolition of the western section (beginning c. 1861) by the architect Hector Lefuel. On the left can be seen a little more than three of the approximately 28 bays of the western section, the elevation of which, with its giant pilasters of the composite order, is traditionally attributed to Jacques II Androuet du Cerceau. Immediately to the right is the Pavillon de la Lanterne, which copies the south facade of the Petite Galerie at the extreme eastern end (not pictured). The Pavillon de la Lanterne is followed by a five-bay pavilion (later heightened by the addition of the upper storey), which matches a similar five-bay pavilion at the eastern end. To its right can be seen approximately the first three of the 29 bays of the central eastern section, the design of which is traditionally attributed to Louis Métezeau. The rich decoration of the eastern section was renewed in 1850.
