Text Appearing Before Image:
h Bryants Minstrels, one Saturday night in 1859, Bryant saidto him: Dan, cant you getus up a walk-around? Ineed something new forMonday night. At that time, all minstrelshows used to end up witha walk-around. Dan Em-mett remained in the houseall day Sunday; but by theafternoon, he had the wordscommencing: I wish I wasin Dixie! When Colonel Brown wrotethe words above quoted, hehad spread out before him theNew York Herald, of Sunday,April 3rd, 1859, with this advertisement: Bryants Min-strels !! Dixies Land: another New Plantation Festival !!!!!It is strange indeed that, even in the South, during andafter the war, there was so little real effort to fix definitelythe origin of this and other popular songs and poems. Theywere accepted greedily by ear, when they hit the popularfancy: but it was rare that any man, or woman, who whistled, sang, or recited them, paused one instant to sift either theirorigin, or what of meaning they had. I recall a lively talk, among members of the Mosaic Club,
Text Appearing After Image:
CAPT. R. T. (tRAV) DANIEL BELLES, BEAUX AND BBAINS OF THE SIXTIES 361 when Trav Daniel and others were discussing this verynational air. Daniel was a star member of the unofficeredclub; a herital thinker, with much of his fathers acumen, information and dry humor; and these he shared in commonwith his sisters, Augusta, Charlotte and Lizzie. He wasvery antithesis, in method, to his bubbling and impulsivebrother-in-law, Jimmie Pegram. At this distance, I cannot recall who were speaking ofDixie, but I think Judge Ran Tucker, J. R. Thompsonand Judge Daniel were among them. Trav made the pointthat a nations song was its trademark and should be veri-fied; but we were all too much in a hurry to stop andthink in those days; and I have no recollection that Dixieever came up as a contention thereafter, even in the Mosaic. It fitted into the time, was accepted as a Southern song, necessarily by a Southern man; and that was the end ofit. Was it both, or either ? Daniel Decatur Emmett was born in Mt.
