slie received in the high school his fitting for college,graduating in 1872. William Leslie Hooper from earliest boyhood was doing the workof a man at home, sawing and splitting wood, caring for the garden,the poultry and the cow, when there was one! Years afterwards hespeaks of this work as the most valuable part of his training. Butthere was more to the ministers home in those days than hard-ship. Such a home might be poor in material things but it wasrich in thinking. There may not have been many books, but whatthere were, were good and, more important, they were read. Soyoung William Leslie, following his tastes, found time to delve intosciences, especially the physical science of his time. He was fondof reading and read well; he was fond of nature, and living in themidst of it, came to know it. Those home years left their mark on William Hooper, and whenthose who know him best in the later years are asked to name hismarked characteristics, while they will impulsively and joyously
