Herkomst : Zuidoost-Azië: Insulair / Indonesië / Sumatera / Sumatera Barat (provincie) voor 1887 Dit is een sterk gebogen mesje, de zogenaamde lawi ayam (de gebogen staartveer van een haan), dat weer is afgeleid van het Arabische jambia. Het lemmet van een dergelijk mes kan aan weerskanten geslepen zijn. Bij het hanteren van het mesje ligt de duim op het handvat en kan de wijsvinger in het ronde gat gestoken worden. Het lemmet wijst naar beneden en de scherpe kant naar voren. Een eventuele steekbeweging is van onderen naar boven (rudak) en kan heel gemene wonden veroorzaken. Vrouwen kunnen het mesje soms in hun haren verstoppen. Het mesje wordt gedragen in een schede of in de plooi van een sarong.
