Summary

Description
English: Castle Hill House, Thornhill Road, Rastrick. This is on an ancient site on which was an earthwork described by Dr Johnson of Pontefract in 1669: "It was trenched about and hollow in the middle, as if many stones had been got out of it. The circumference of it measured 188 yds (172m) within the trench and 117 yds (107m) on the top". In the late 18C a Mr Watson recorded that it had been lately destroyed for the sake of the stone that it contained. Cremation urns have been found from time to time, and these are considered to be Anglian. According to the English Heritage listing (3/214) it was a small country house, and has been extended at various times and is now divided into several dwellings.
