II.,introduced by sir W. Scott in The Heart ofMidlothian. Jeanie Deans has an inter-view with her in the gardens at Richmond, Carmen /j Koppay, Artist rHE narrator of the story is on the banks of the Guadalquiver, atthe time in the evening when the women bathe there.A woman descended the stairway that led to the river and seatedherself near me. She was simply, perhaps poorly, dressed all in black, like the greater part of the grisettes in the evening. As she approachedme, mv bather allowed the mantilla that covered her head to slip down onher shoulders, and in the dim light of the stars I saw that she was small, young, well made, and with very large eyes. . . . Her skin, although perfe^lysmooth, strongly approximated copper in color. Her eyes were, oblique, but admirably shaped; her lips rather large, hut well formed, and display-ing teeth whiter than blanched almonds. Her hair, perhaps a little coarse, was black, long and glossy, with blue tints like the wing of a raven. Merimees Carmen.

He re-paired Agricolas wall to obstruct the incur-sions of the Caledonians, and while he wasemployed on this work was attacked by aparty commanded by Oscar, son of Ossianand grandson of Fingal. The warriorsof Caros fled, and Oscar remained like arock left by the ebbing sea.—Ossian, TheWar of Caros.
