Description
English: Portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Rumsey Broom, United States Marine Corps. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, who served with great distinction during the War of 1812 and another 28 years thereafter. Broom was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Marines on June 27, 1813 with a brevet commission the year before. He served on the USS North Carolina and at Headquarters, U. S. Marine Corps as well as Marine Barracks in Washington, New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk. He died on November 14, 1840 and was buried in Congressional Cemetery in Washington. This image of an oval oil painting shows Broom as a First Lieutenant. It was painted between 1814 and 1821 by an unknown artist and was from the holdings of the United States Marine Corps.
