A key point of the article and the reason for this image is exactly that Cott used high quality illustrations - often hand-drawn by himself, as here - extensively in this book to make the (evolutionary ecology) case for coloration being adaptive, i.e. that visual appearances had Darwinian significance. The only way to show the nature of the visual argumentation is actually to illustrate it with examples. |
