Summary[edit]

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Example illustration beautifully drawn by Hugh Cott as Figure 76 of Adaptive Coloration in Animals, 1940, showing a fish, Chaetodon capistratus, with both a stripe concealing its eye, and a false eyespot near the tail, showing the importance of protecting the eye and two mechanisms of doing so.

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) The image shows both the extraordinary artistic skill of Cott, the zoologist, and the method used in the book, which is to argue from detailed, well illustrated, and exceptionally clear examples. The method is Darwinian, though Darwin mainly used text. This image shows two mechanisms at once, both concealment and diversion.

A key point of the article and the reason for this image is exactly that Cott used high quality illustrations - often hand-drawn by himself, as here - extensively in this book to make the (evolutionary ecology) case for coloration being adaptive, i.e. that visual appearances had Darwinian significance. The only way to show the nature of the visual argumentation is actually to illustrate it with examples.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The image is used only in this article, at low resolution. It is carefully chosen to illustrate, minimally, both Cott's skill and two components of the book's argument, namely that coloration works both to conceal and to advertise.
