Summary

Description The U.S. Navy flight deck crewman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9) prepare to remove Lieutenant J.J. Collins of Fighting Squadron 15 (VF-15) from his Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat, after he crash-landed on board. Collins was seriously wounded, and his plane badly damaged, by Japanese Anti-aircraft fire during the Wake Island Raid on 23 May 1944. Note the firefighting team at right.
