Summary

Description
English: Donaghadee Parish Church Donaghadee Parish Church (Church of Ireland) and adjoining churchyard.

The site of the church is believed to have been a place of worship since the time of the Druids. St Patrick is also believed to have visited when a stone church was erected (circa 5th Century AD), known as the Church of "Dofnachti". A more substantial building is thought to have been erected by John de Courcy c1177. This was rebuilt in 1626 by Hugh Montgomery and other Scottish settlers to the area during the Ulster Plantation. Built from local stone taken from Newry, Dundonald and Dungannon, the church was enlarged in 1881. The stone tower was built in 1833 by Captain Daniel De Lacherois and includes a bell weighing over a ton which was donated by the same family. The adjoining churchyard contains graves dating from the 17th Century, many in excellent condition. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=3453551 for some related images.

See also the excellent archive of Bill Caldwell at http://www.graves1.homecall.co.uk/Donaghadee/FrameSet.htm for many images of the individual headstones.
