Summary

Description
English: The Batavier [sic], a Dutch steamship that carried cattle and sheep from the European mainland to London. One of 30 vessels in the trade, she was primarily a passenger ship that brought a few beasts on her decks besides a general cargo. The promiscuous mixing of animals from all over mainland Europe at the Metropolitan Cattle Market, London, was bound to introduce cattle disease. The cattle plague of 1865 (the same year as this engraving) has been described as the most dramatic event in 19th century British agricultural history.
