THE ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE COAL TRAIN SERVICE THAT IS PLAYING A REAL PART IN FURNISHING THE FUEL FOR UNCLE SAMS SHIPS ON page 22 of the last annual report of the Norfolk& Western Railway was the significant statementthat during the month of October, 1917, when con-ditions were normal, the cost of freight movement withelectricity was 26 per cent less that if steam had beenused. For amplification of the companys operatingstatement it is permissible to state that the electriccosts included allowance for fixed charges, depreciation,maintenance of track, line, power and shops, etc.; whilethe steam figures covering similar charges were calcu-lated in accordance with the rules of the InterstateCommerce Commission. But it must be far more gratifying to the directorsof the company to know that their decision to electrifyhas also proved of the greatest possible value in thewinning of the war.
