Summary

Description
English: Esplanade, Harrogate These two houses were built in the 1850's as part of a model development on the Duchy of Lancaster's estate. They face out across the bottom end of the Stray towards the fashionable area of Montpelier, and at one time or another they have both been hotels. Beech Villa [left] once provided accommodation for E M Forster during 1913, when he was writing his novel 'Maurice'. In the 1860s and 1870s it was the home and studio of artist Thomas Holroyd and his photographer brother James Holroyd. It was then known as Esplanade House.
