Summary

Description

Bain News Service photograph, originally titled "Blimp, Zeppelin No. 3, in shed, seen from water", picture labeled "Zeppelin III", but most likely this is Zeppelin LZ-5, later bought by the German Army and redesignated LII.

The LZ-5 made its maiden flight on 26 May 1909 and undertook a much-noted overland voyage to Bitterfeld and back from 29 May to 2 June – 1194km (742 miles) in total. On the way back it was slightly damaged when it collided with a pear tree near Göppingen. Upon repair it was sold to the German Army, where it flew as LII until it was destroyed in a storm on 24 April 1910 near Weilburg.
