Summary

Description
English: Geocrab Hatchery There are two pipes that run from Loch na Eilein down the hill to the salmon hatchery at the shore. One is an old cast iron pipe, the other, more recent addition is plastic. The hatchery site was originally a mill, and one of the workers there once told me that there are still the remains of a large water wheel within the main building. Nowadays it produces thousands of young salmon that are exported mainly via a "wellboat" or live fish carrying ship, that comes into the bay. The fish are taken out to the sea cages where they are grown on, before harvesting and shipping to the mainland for processing. Salmon is still a big employer on the island - despite the recent consolidation of the industry.
