Français : George Gordon Meade ( 31 décembre1815 – 6 novembre1872), le vainqueur de Gettysburg, est né de parents américains à Cadix, en Espagne. Il a été à West Point et diplômé en 1835. Il servit un an dans l'artillerie avant de démissionner pour devenir ingénieur civil. Par la suite, ayant de la difficulté de trouver un emploi approprié dans son domaine, il rejoint l'armée en 1842 et servit au Mexique.
