Summary

Description

1914 photo postcard of the Grand Hotel, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. It was designed by Cuthbert Brodrick and opened in 1867. The exterior carving was executed by Benjamin Burstall and Matthew Taylor of Leeds. It was shelled on 16 December 1914, and the postcard is labelled on the front with that date. The images shows the bomb damage to the facade of the hotel restaurant, and also the stone carving by Burstall & Taylor.

Note: the stone-carved emblem above some of the window arches has the monogram "GH" for Grand Hotel.

Editing for brightness and contrast in old images almost always causes loss of detail where there is need for that detail for research purposes
