ry of Mahoning county, Mr. David Loveland gives a sketch ofthe beginning of the manufacture of iron in the Mahoning valley, an industrywhich has created a city almost continuous for a score of miles along the stream. It was commenced by two brothers, James and Daniel Heaton, men of enter-prising and experimenting disposition. In 1805 or 1806 they erected a furnaceon Yellow Creek, near Mahoning river, about five miles southeast of Youngs-town, which soon went into active operation. Connected with and belonging tothe furnace proper were about one hundred acres of well-timbered land whichsupplied the charcoal and much of the ore for the works. It was called theHeaton furnace. The blast was produced by an apparatus of peculiar construc-tion and was similar in principle to that produced by the column of water ofthe early furnaces. After this furnace had been in operation for some time, James Heaton trans-ferred his interest to his brother Daniel, and built the second furnace in this valley
