Jourdan of the corps of engineers of the Brazilian army (Rio de Janeiro: 1871) shows the concept of the Mitre/Caixas flanking plan by which the fortress would be encircled and cut off by land. On the left is the River Paraguay; the fortress blocks its navigation. |
