His unwearied devotion tor over forty years to the people of Jaffnaenabled him to win the confidenceand affection of the whole com-munity. Having resigned his posi-tion in June, 1889, the Rev. S. VV.Howland, M.A., for sixteen years amissionary of the American Missionin Jaffna, was chosen as his suc-cessor. Besides the Principal, tliere arein the College two foreign professorswho hold the degree of B.A., andfive able native professors, all ojivhom are Christians. There hasnever been a heathen teacher employedin the College, and it is hoped therenevtr will be, for it is believed thatone heathen teacher in an institu-tion like this could undo the workof many Christian teachers.
