Summary

Description
English: First preserved pages from Luther's Catechism in the second Romanian edition of 1559; as argued by scholar Ioachim Crăciun, this reproduces a (since-lost) 1544 edition put out at Hermannstadt (Sibiu) by Philippus Pictor (Philipp Maler, Filip Moldoveanul), with cosmetic changes. The original book was intended for the spread of Lutheranism among the Orthodox reading public of Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia. The text rendered here includes references to 1540s events, and also mentions "Romanian Christians" (рꙋмѫни крєщини) and "the Romanian tongue" (лимба рꙋмѫнѣскѫ).
