English: This painting was cut in two and was rejoined in 1996 (thus two ID numbers, for two separate original owners and provenance records). The painting is still smaller than it was - it is missing drapery on the left and has been cropped all around.
English: Jan Steen may be influenced by Tobias and Sarah, by Nicolaus Knupfer which shows a similar composition.
