Description
English: John White (1748–1813) is an interesting example of a surveyor and property speculator who also designed and built buildings. As Surveyor to the Duke of Portland, he was responsible for laying out the Duke’s estate in Marylebone, London, from 1787 and was one of the principal speculators on it, building houses in Harley Street. He also produced three plans for redeveloping the Crown estate in Marylebone, until then a farm. This project was eventually taken over by John Nash and became the Regent’s Park with villas in it and terraced houses around it. Apart from his London work, he also designed or altered several country houses in a late Neo-Classical style. The artist of his portrait is unknown.
