Description

Date: Circa 1960s Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Ross Hall Scenics, Dexter Press (#56460-B) Postmark: None Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: Text on reverse of postcard --

CANOE CAMP, on near shore of Clearwater River, where L-C Expedition hewed dug-outs from large native pine, "burning out the holler of our canoes". The North Fork flows past Ahsahka village on the farther shore. Here, the expedition cut off the foretop of their 38 horses and left them in care of the friendly Nez Perce. They then buried their saddles, part of their powder and balls under cover of night. They next day they embarked and began the 60 miles to Lewiston, thence on to the Pacific.
