Purpose of use

As the first photograph of a live adult giant squid, the image depicts a historically significant event. It is intended to show: (a) the appearance of the specimen in its live state; (b) the size of the specimen in its live state; (c) the partially intact reddish skin of this species, which is always lost/damaged in dead specimens; (d) muscular constriction around the squid's eye, which can only be seen in a live animal and cannot be conveyed in text alone; and (e) the method of capture of the specimen.
