f engineer. 684 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING. Great Northern Locomotive. The annexed engraving shows a newtype o( locomotive recently designed byMr. H. A. Ivatt, locomotive superintend-ent of the Great Northern Railway ofEngland. Mr. Ivatt has not been longlocomotive superintendent, and this isthe first important designing work whichhe has done. side, after which the same side is painteda solid black. The glass is then placed ina plain ring of polished brass having aflange which is faced off true to receivethe glass disk; the latter is held in placein the ring by a cast-iron back fastenedto the ring by three tap bolts; the backhaving the usual boss at the center, whichfits the stud on the front-end door. and took a seat, while the other passen-gers were getting out. One of these passengers, seeing the oldlady sitting calmly among her bundles,said to her, Madam, why do you sitthere? Arent you frightened? Frightened? she repeated. Laudsakes! Why, I thought this was the waythey always stopped.

It will be noticed that with the exceptionof having inside cylinders, the engine haswhat be called an American look, the cabbeing much larger than we find on theordinary run of English engines. Thecylinders are 17^2 x 26 inches stroke andthe driving wheels are 79 inches in dia- Painting the back of glass black afterthe engine number is put on, causes thelatter to stand prominently forth fromits mirror-like setting, and makes it oneof the tastiest conceptions for a detail thathas corners usually smudgy with lamp-black.
