Summary

Description The Glass Museum is housed in the Stephens Palace, a villa build in the second half of the 18th century for William Stephens (1731-1803). Stephens was an English businessman who took over the unsuccessful Royal Glass Factory started some years earlier by an Irishman, John Beare. Under the protection of the powerful Prime Minister the Marquis of Pombal, who gave him the monopoly of glass supply in Portugal and its colonies, Stephens developed the business to the point that Marinha Grande became synonymous with glass, particularly traditionally made fine crystal. Stephens was an enlightened entrepreneur who saw that "a happy and motivated workforce was important to achieve productivity. He introduced a programme of social welfare to Marinha Grande. He opened schools, organised an illness relief fund and pension system, closed the taverns and introduced cultural activities, reorganised the food supply, and most significantly introduced developments to agriculture." (Wikipedia) The permanent collection of the Museum consists of a relatively small number of pieces from various Portuguese glass factories as well as machines and tools used by glass workers.
