Het figuur toont 6 typen informatie: geografische locatie, de factor tijd, temperatuur, de route en richting van de troepen en het aantal (nog resterende) manschappen. Volgens Edward Tufte, schrijver van het boek 'The Visual Display of Quantitatieve Information', een bijbel voor statistici volgens The Economist, is dit de beste statistische grafiek aller tijden.
