Notes Some additional information: James Averell was a young man in his twenties when he died. He attended Harvard University and trained as an architect. His mother, Emily Sibley Watson, founded the Memorial Art Gallery in his memory in 1913. His cousin Ruth, with whom he was very close growing up, donated the painting in his memory. Ruth Sibley Gade was married to John Gade, who was the architect who designed the Memorial Art Gallery building. He was Norwegian and was a friend of the painter, Jonas Lie, so no doubt there Mrs. Gade choice was a very personal one in giving the painting to the young museum in memory of a precious cousin.
