Le musée de plein air de Seurasaari a été fondé en 1909 par le Professeur Olai Heikel, un spécialiste d'ethnologie et d'architecture vernaculaire.

Sa création a été inspirée par le musée suédois de Skansen, le premier en Europe.

Il est établi sur une partie d'une île protégée dans la banlieue d'Helsinki.

On peut y visiter une trentaine de maisons en bois de différentes régions de Finlande, meublées et équipées selon la tradition.

Des animations (danse, musique, artisanat, ..) sont organisées péridodiquement.

Le musée est ouvert 4 mois de l'année en été et reçoit 50.000 visiteurs. L'hiver c'est un parc où les Finlandais font du ski de fond.
