Summary

Description

USS KearsargeCommissioned in 1861 to combat Confederate raiders in European waters, Kearsarge’ s most successful engagement was with CSS Alabama. After the Civil War, she was placed out of commission, only returning two years later, serving in the Pacific until placed out of commission again two years later. In 1873, Kearsarge was commissioned and served in Asiatic waters. Decommissioned yet again five years later, she was brought back into service a year later. Kearsarge served for ten years in the Atlantic until being wrecked on Roncador Reef on 2 Feburary 1888 while en route from Haiti to Nicaragua. An effort to salvage her proved fruitless, and USS Kearsarge was stricken from the Navy List later in the year.

USS Kearsarge (1862-1894) "The Gun that Sunk the 'Alabama'...". Halftone reproduction of a photograph of Kearsarge's after XI-inch Dahlgren pivot gun, with ship's officers and the quarter deck beyond, circa the 1870s. This gun has an iron pivot mounting, of a type adopted after the Civil War, and may or may not be the same weapon that was on board the ship at the time of her battle with CSS Alabama in June 1864. Copied from Francis T. Miller's "The Photographic History of the Civil War, Volume VI: The Navies", page 303. Naval History and Heritage Command: NH 52029
