5. ↑ Wie fließt doch in einer kleinen Stadt
   So klar und offen das Leben:
   Man weiß, was ein jeder ist und hat -
   Was kann es Netteres geben.
6. ↑ Man lebt mit der ganzen Bürgerschaft wie
   In einer großen Familie -
   Man weiß: Die kochen heut' Sellerie
   Und jene Petersilie.
7. ↑ Man kennt die Freuden von aller Welt
   Und ihre Schmerzen und Sorgen;
   Man weiß, der Baumeister hat kein Geld
   Und der Amtsrichter will ihm keins borgen.
8. ↑ Da ist der Bürgermeister! Man schaut
   Ihn täglich, man kennt ihn aufs beste:
   Seine Alltagshose ist uns vertraut
   Wie seine Sonntagsweste.
9. ↑ Man kennt die Stunde, da seine Frau
   Ihn pflegt aus der Kneipe zu treiben,
   Und wenn er redet, so weiß man genau,
   Wo er wird stecken bleiben.
10. ↑ Man weiß, wie oft er zum Wohle der Stadt
    Mit den Stadträten geschlafen,
    Und was er im Skatspiel gewonnen hat,
    Wenn sie sich wachend trafen.
11. ↑ Auch diese Räte zählt jedes Kind
    Seit Jahren zu seiner Bekanntschaft;
    Man weiß, wer die größten Esel sind
    Und kennt ihre werte Verwandschaft.
12. ↑ Man kennt die Handschuhnummer aufs Daus
    Von Pastor Müllers Mariechen
    Und den Zeitpunkt, wann die Frau Doktor Claus
    Das vierzehnte wird kriegen.
13. ↑ Man weiß von jeder Stunde Bescheid:
    Wan die Schulzen die Hemden bügelt,
    Und wann der Bahnhofsinspektor Veit
    Am liebsten die Gattin prügelt.
14. ↑ Man weiß, wann er sich betrunken hat
    Und wann er zur Ruh sich begeben -
    Es ist in solch einer kleinen Stadt
    Fürwahr eine Lust zu leben!
