Text Appearing Before Image:
nceretained a footing on the coast of Newfoundland fortwo centuries is appended. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) allowed the Erenchto catch and dry fish on the west and north-east coastsof Newfoundland, to erect stages of boards and hutsnecessary for drying fish; and to resort to the coastonly during the fishing season. They were not towinter there, erect permanent buildings, or fortify anyplaces; and they admitted British sovereignty over theisland. The Treaty of Paris (1763) ceded to Erance theislands of St. Pierre and Miquelon as a shelter forErench fishermen, but not to be fortified, and to haveonly a guard of fifty men for police purposes. The Treaty of Versailles (1783) confirmed Erancein the occupancy of St. Pierre, but changed theboundaries of the Erencli shore, previously Cape Bona-vista and Cape Riclie, to Cape John and Cape Bay,prescribing however, that the fishery should be carriedon as already provided by the Treaty of Utrecht.
